What it costs to charge an EV in New Zealand
Charging at home and charging on the motorway differ by a factor of nearly three. Which one you mostly do decides what an EV costs you to run.

The arithmetic
Cost of a charge = energy added × price per kWh. Energy added, for a 10–80% charge, is 70% of the usable battery. So a 60 kWh car takes about 42 kWh, and the only variable that matters is what you pay per kWh.

These are illustrative rates, not quoted tariffs. ChargeMap has no licensed price feed, and public charging prices move with the operator, the plan and the time of day. Naming a company's price here would be a claim that could be stale within a month. Put your own number in: the sum is simple enough to do in your head.
Why home charging dominates the answer
Most charging happens at home overnight, at the cheapest rate in the table, and many retailers offer a night rate below even that. Public DC fast charging is the expensive option and it is priced for what it is — convenience on a journey. An owner who charges at home and uses the public network only on trips pays close to the top row most of the time.
To hold this against a petrol car, work the petrol side out per kilometre on RunCost, which uses official fuel-economy test figures, and compare like with like.
What is not included
Road user charges, which now apply to light electric vehicles in New Zealand, are a real running cost and are not in these figures — they are charged per distance, not per kWh, so they do not belong in a price-per-charge sum. Check the current rate with NZTA.
